Student Council offers cash for best costumes

What child doesn’t remember going trick or treating, not only to collect loads of candy, but to show off your frightening costume?  While maintaining this tradition as high schoolers may seem immature to some, many students at Mount Carmel don’t mind putting together some interesting costumes for Halloween.

Mount Carmel’s Halloween costume contest will take place on during all lunch periods in the Student Commons. The top three costumes in each lunch period, as chosen by a vote by the students, will win a cash prize. First place wins $50, second place nets $25, and third place takes home $10.

Many students seem to be excited about dressing up. While some may still be figuring out what to wear this Friday, at least one student is planning on what he’ll be doing next year.  That would be junior Wallace Goode, who explains “It’s always a fun experience and I plan to do it again next year with a whole new design.”

No registration is needed for this event; students may simply come to school in costume.  However, some rules and regulations need to be followed.  Specifically, costumes should not portray bad influences such as drugs, gangs, slurs, and cannot be demeaning towards any group, including women. In addition, students are prohibited from wearing masks.

“No weapons, no masks, costumes need to be in good taste,” stated Mr. Sean Sweany, Director of Student Activities.  But he added that in MC’s history this has rarely been a problem, as students are known to have a good time while abiding by the rules.
