Director of Student Activities, Mr. Patrick McGarry, moderates the student council

Student Council has been revamped this year under the new leadership of Mr. Patrick McGarry, director of student activities, and his team of student leaders. Their responsibilities include organizing annual events such as homecoming and spirit week, as well as special occasions like the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  In addition, they re expected to relay student opinion to the school administration.

As happens in every school, at times MC students are frustrated by certain policies and rules.  The student council hopes to play a role in expressing those frustrations constructively. In order to do so, McGarry notes that “We need to have a good line of communication (between) the student body and the faculty.”

This year’s council is made up of three officers (elected last May by the entire community) and four representatives from each class.

Dominic Antonietti serves as the president, and he is assisted by Macauley Kilbane, vice president of spirit, and Jaylen Anderson, vice president of communication.

Senior representatives are Jake Gurgevich, Leonard Jones, Rudy Melchiorre and Jack Spellman.  The juniors include Eric Correa, Luke Ehrenstrom, Tommy Jacobs, and Zac Styka.  Finally, Justin Cozzie, Anthony Kubik, and Jason Wendling represent the sophomore class. Freshman representatives will be chosen during trimester two.

The most recent success of the student council happened at homecoming, with the hiring of DJ “Mike P.” While the choice of a DJ may seem trivial, it can have a huge effect on the mood of a dance.   Mike P was a huge success at homecoming, and as McGarry recalled ” We already(had)  booked him for prom by the time he was done playing music here.”

Another recent idea was to celebrate El Día de los Muertos (or the Day of the Dead), a popular tradition in Mexican culture honoring deceased family or friends.  It is celebrated by bringing in a photo or an artifact that reminds of you this person. Student council has partnered with La Caravana – the MC Spanish club moderated by Señor Mota- in organizing this celebration. Students were invited to bring a photo or artifact and place it on the special display in the Commons.

The student council plans to meet frequently, during lunches and Studium. Typically, they will meet on a Monday to brainstorm ideas for upcoming events.

According to McGArry, “These meetings are very productive, and normally I let the guys just talk and come up with ideas.”
