It only took Mr. Neil Heyman three weeks into school to figure out what Mount Carmel is all about. “It’s a fierce brotherhood: the boys are the first to push each other down, but also the first to pick them up.”

Heyman, a Cincinnati native, attended DePaul University here in Chicago. There he studied American politics and received his masters degree in English literature. Once he knew his goal of becoming the starting left fielder for the Cincinnati Reds wouldn’t work out, he decided teaching was the way to go.

Before accepting his first full-time teaching job at MC, he taught courses at several community colleges. However, he always wanted to teach in an environment where, “He knew he could  help the kids out.”  He also prefers the Catholic school environment and wanted to be teaching in the city.

Like a lot of teachers at MC, Heyman also plans to get involved in after-school activities. He will coach tennis in the spring and is trying to get a Model U.N. club started.

Heyman lives in the Homewood area, so he has a long commute every morning. At his previous jobs, his drive was always ten to fifteen minutes from his home, but he recalled, “I wasn’t going to let the drive stop me from doing what I wanted.”

Mr. Heyman is a great addition  to the Mount Carmel staff, and it’s safe to say that he is happy to be here.
