2015 wasn’t a complete dud for Hollywood, but the year was full of letdowns. Looking to the horizon, however, we can see that 2016 is shining brightly with films.

10. DeadPool (to be released February 12) will be the first superhero movie of the year. Ryan Reynolds,  given an opportunity from Marvel to portray Wade Wilson, is known as the energetic anti-hero and comedic DeadPool. DeadPool, on the hunt for the man who ruined his life and kidnapped his girl, will not stop until she is back safe. Although DeadPool is a superhero film, it isn’t a movie you’d see on family movie night. R-rated, this Marvel movie may be the first that isn’t filled with kids.

9. Finding Dory (to be released on June 17) is far overdue, but since the announcement of this movie it has caused quite a splash. The title of this animated says it all: Finding Dory is about a fish who constantly gets lost or forgets where she’s from, the ocean being such a large place. If it’s anything like Finding Nemo, which came out 12 years ago – and still is a Disney favorite – this movie a must see.

8. Angry Birds should’ve been released a year or two ago when the app was at its pinnacle of popularity and found on almost every gadget.  But hey, better late then never. The popular game was about birds who sling-shot to destroy obstacles from taunting pigs. Now it’s been made into a movie that will be released May 20th. If the movie is made with creativity and imagination, I wouldn’t mind seeing some spinoffs. Don’t forget there’s also an Angry Bird Space app.

7. Captain America Civil War could be a HUGE summer blockbuster when released on May 6. The epic battle will turn them allies into “frenemies.” You’ll have to chose a side – team Cap or team Iron Man – because whatever happens, nothing will be the same again.  Familiar superheroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Vision, Falcon, and Hawkey will be joined by the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spiderman. Cap will leading a team rebelling against the government for monitoring all there moves while they long to roam freely.  Iron Man sides with the government in believing the damage done during Avengers should never happen again.

6. I’m curious to see Doctor Strange. Not only does it have an intriguing plot – about an ex-surgeon who is taught magic by a sorcerer in order to defend the world from all evil – but it features Benedict Cumberbatch, an experienced actor (you may recall in the second Star Trek film or from Imitation Game) But hasn’t played a superhero role yet.  He’ll get that chance in the film to be released on November 4.

5. X-Men: Apocalypse, releasing May 27, will complete the trilogy which began with X-Men:First Class (2011) and continued with X-Men:  Days of Future Past (2015). The mutants will be fighting the very first of their kind, Apocalypse, a creature who is looked upon as a god. Apocalypse awakes with vengeance to turn the soil into ashes so that he can rule the world, and if it wasn’t for the X-Men, he would. They will be there to stop him as he tries to recruit other mutants to unleash hell.

4. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a spinoff that has been shrouded in secrecy. The recently released trailer caught fans by surprise, but if the spinoff is anything like the original Cloverfield (2008) it might just be it. The first film followed a group of friends trying to get out of New York after the invasion of an extraterrestrial monster.  While they didn’t show much in the trailer besides three people in a bunker going crazy while solving puzzles, I’m sure Paramount has something up its sleeve and the aliens will be back. You either liked the first film or hated it – there was no in-between. I loved it and look forward to this sequel.

3. Rogue One : A Star Wars Story has already revealed its cast, but the plot is still secret as mostly all Star Wars movies are until we get closer to the release date of December 16th. A Star Wars movie will never let you down, especially one with a director like Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, 2014). Although some thought Star Wars: Force Awakens was a bit of a let down, I’m always in for a visually beautiful movie in a galaxy far, far away.

2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will immerse us into the DC Cinematic Universe starting March 25th. It’s stacked with known Hollywood superstars like Ben Affleck (playing the new caped crusader himself), Henry Cavil (cast as the man of steel, Superman), Gal Gadot (as the amazon princess Wonder Woman), and Jesse Eisenberg (in the role of evil, bald-headed Lex Luthor).  Zack Snyder, who directed Man Of Steel, my all time favorite superhero movie, is back at it again.  I love how Snyder tells a story and makes you feel a connection with his characters. Whether you side with team Batman or team Superman won’t matter; the fans win since we’re finally given this movie.

1. In most superhero movies, the main character goes against the biggest and baddest villain to save the world from mass destruction. Blah, Blah, Blah — the plot has been used many times throughout film history, we’re snoozing waiting for a twist that will wake us from our deep sleep. Well, on August 5 Warner Bros will present Suicide Squad, villains who assemble to fight something bigger and much more evil than themselves. The concept of villains fighting to save the world the world won’t seem so crazy that it has you setting an appointment up with your therapist because there’s also a comedic side to the characters colorful personalities resembling their outfits. With a very talented cast including Jared Leto (the Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Will Smith (Deadshot), and Cara Delevigne (Enchantress) this film is bound for success. Director David Ayer (Fury and End Of Watch) is known for pushing actors to their limits so expect to see all give their greatest performance.

Of course, there is only one sure way to find out if any of these movies are HOT OR FLOP, and that’s to experience them in theaters with a big bucket of buttery popcorn, a large soda and your choice of candy, surrounded by fans like strapped in their seats ready for this fantastic movie year to begin. Enjoy !!
