While studium has only been in effect for four years, it has become well established in the culture of Mount Carmel. The idea behind studium is to help strengthen the relationship between students and their peers. The structure of studium divides the MC community into 24 smaller communities. All grade levels are mingled in each studium so that students can familiarize themselves with people outside of their graduating class.

The annual election of studium captains starts with students who express interest in the position, according to Mr. Sweany, studium director. All studiums elect a leader. Voting may be based on the familiarity or popularity of the student, or the student may just win by luck. After all studiums have voted, they take the ballots and tally them, the student with the highest number of votes wins. Different positions are appointed, there’s a studium captain and a floor captain. A studium captain only represents his own classroom, but the floor captains represent the whole floor that their studium is on.

Studium is intended to be a community of its own. Everyone in a specific studium grows closer to one another due to the extensive time students spend with the individuals in their room. They meet three times a week, so people get a chance to enhance the personal relationships with each student who is in to their studium. “Studium is a great way to communicate with different students that aren’t from your grade level,” said Zachary Winder, from Studium 106.

Studium also conducts Mission Collection. Mission Collection is a program that was created to raise money to give to the less fortunate. The program has collected a lot of money from the past years, and MC continues to raise the bar.

Not only is studium determined to help you socially, but it’s a great way to catch up on your studies. Studium isn’t a free period, you can get a lot done in studium, like homework. Within each studium, their is a teacher willing to help each student so that they become the best student possible. Keanu Rodriguez, from studium 301, said, “I like studium, because it brings a positive attitude to students. It is also a great time of the day to get homework done.”

Studium also hosts  intramural football, dodgeball, and basketball. This gives students the opportunity to have fun with their peers and helps them get comfortable with different cultures of people. Myles Talton, from studium 208 said, he looks forward to this year’s intramural dodgeball because it is very fun.

Studium continues to impact students in a positive way.
