Academic Council considers new electives

According to Counselor In preparation for the 2015-16 school year, Mount Carmel’s Academic Council has been working to add new electives to the curriculum to broaden students’ selection of classes and give them a chance to vary their studies.

The process of developing new electives began when the Counseling Department conducted a need’s assessment for Mount Carmel students.  There were three areas under consideration:  a study hall for athletes; new electives for  upperclassmen; and a college career class. The Counseling Department concluded that the easiest change would be to the elective offerings, so that became would be the first step.

After consulting with teachers in each academic department, the Counseling Department developed a survey asking students which electives they would like to see for next year.  Five Studium were chosen at random to complete these surveys.

According to Counselor Shanta McKay, if students didn’t like the choices given, they had the option to offer their own suggestions.

The top two courses identified by students were engineering and cooking.

If any new electives are offered next year, it won’t mean much for this year’s seniors, but it seems clear that underclassmen would  like to see additional course offerings.
