Mothers to break out dancing shoes

Many Mount Carmel students and their moms enjoyed the annual Mother-Son dance last year.

Mothers who send their sons to Mount Carmel make many sacrifices, both in paying private school tuition and in supporting their sons emotionally through all the challenges of high school.  The annual Mother-Son Dance, which will take place on Saturday, December 3, from 8:00-10:30 pm in the Commons, is a time for students to show their gratitude towards their mothers by sharing an evening of dinner and dancing.

Tickets are $35, which includes admission and light snacks. For some, like  senior MJ Faso, the dance is an annual event. “I’ve gone every year and I love my mom, so why would I not go this year?”

Sophomore Sergio Valencia also is appreciative of the opportunity to give something back. “At my grammar school there was really nothing like a dance. I just want to be able to say thank you to my mom for all the things she’s done for me, like sending me here (to Mount Carmel).”

Junior Beau Saunoris’ mom expressed the Mothers’ Club’s purpose in sponsoring the event. “The point is for moms to spend time with their sons. It’s a night for moms like me to spend with their beautiful boys and take in the moment.”

While all students and mothers are invited, not all choose to participate. While many see it as a night to say “thank you,” others are not convinced of its value.

For example, Conor Fagan doesn’t need a special occasion in order to spend time with his mom. “When I don’t have plans on the weekends, I generally spend time with my mom, so for me there is no point in going with her to the dance.”

Junior Dennis Graham is another who does not plan on attending, but for a more obvious reason. “I have other things planned that night. My mom doesn’t want to go (anyway).”

But for most mothers and sons who attend, there’s little question that the evening is about showing appreciation and love, even if it shouldn’t take a dance to do it.
