Caravan mourns Mike Cummings ’60

A great man, known by many within the MC community, recently passed away. Mike Cummings (’60) passed away on Monday, March 5. He will be remembered by his scores of friends for his gentle spirit and great generosity to the Mount Carmel community.

After attending MC, Cummings graduated from the University of Notre Dame, and later served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. After his service to his country, Cummings served the City of Chicago in a variety of roles, eventually as the Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Aviation at Midway Airport.

Cummings was a regular presence at MC events and served on the organizing committee for the “Big Event” fundraiser (the predecessor to the Caravan Gala) for many years.  He loved attending MC football games and wrestling matches and enjoyed gathering with his classmates and friends at alumni events.  His life-long generosity to the school enabled many young men to attend Mount Carmel.

In 1977, Cummings was named the Mount Carmel Man of the Year, and he also was inducted into the MC Hall of Fame.

Visitation for Mike Cummings will be held on Thursday, March 6, from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Thompson and Kuenster Funeral Home, 5570 W. 95th St.  The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 653 W. 37th St. in Chicago.

Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
