During National Signing Day on November 12, four Mount Carmel baseball players locked in their decision to play for division one colleges.

Fr. Tony Mazurkiewicz, president of Mount Carmel, congratulated the parents for their years of commitment to their sons’ baseball careers. Then he congratulated the players.  “First and foremost, Mount Carmel’s athletics are about character, and these young men have expressed that in the way they carry themselves on and off the field.”

Coach Brian Hurry, head baseball coach, also expressed how proud he is of his players, calling it a “very proud day – in fact my favorite day of the year.” Hurry, who won a championship with these men in 2013, recalled “their hard work and sacrifices.”

Hurry hopes for the best for these players as they go on to a different stage in their lives. “I hope that these guys will to use baseball to learn life lessons and to earn their college degree.”

Joshua Stowers signed with the University of Louisville. An outfielder for Mount Carmel, his choice was clear to attend Louisville. “I am excited about joining a team in Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the best baseball conferences.”

Ako Thomas, who committed to the University of Michigan, appreciated how Mount Carmel had a big influence on him. “MC taught me how to be a gentleman, discipline, and life skills.” Thomas now believes “nothing is impossible.”

Malik Carpenter signed with Chicago State University. His best memories out of all his Mount Carmel experiences involved the championship: ” Everything from Jerry Houston’s motivational speeches to the dog pile at the end of the game.”

For Scott Kapers, who committed to Valparaiso University, the decision was about academics. “I wanted to stay close to home and it offers good academics.
