Artist gives new twist to classic paintings

Harmonia Rosales is an Afro-Cuban artist who was born Chicago and recently opened her first solo art show at the Sambaed Bilodeau Contemporary Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Rosales is the artist responsible for the famous Instagram rendition of the “Creation of Adam.”

“The Creation of Adam” is a fresco painted by Italian artist Michelangelo, which forms part of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling.  This painting, created between 1508–1512, illustrates the biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man.

In addition to “The Creation of Adam,” other paintings that Rosales is known for are ” The Birth of Eve,”  “Ase,”  ” Assumption of a Woman,” “The Harvest,” “Winter, 2018” and “El Nanego.”

Jorge Rodriguez-Jimenez, in his article published on fierce.mitu.com, observes that Rosales draws from “entrenched patriarchal histories” but reframes those histories “through a black and female lens.”  In so doing, she “makes people see alternative possibilities that question humankind’s embedded ideologies.”
