Officer Asahi Hayden is the newest member of Mount Carmel’s Security Office staff

From majoring in pre-med, to spending 10 years as a librarian, to working in law enforcement, Ms. Asahi Hayden has followed an unusual path to her job as Mount Carmel’s newest security officer.

Hayden was born in Columbus, Ohio, where she attended The Ohio State University. After two years at Ohio State, she transferred to the University of Chicago first majoring in psychology, before switching to pre-med. After spending her last two years at the University of Chicago, she decided to settle in Hyde Park.

Prior to joining the police force, Hayden spent ten years as a librarian at the University of Chicago. Leaving that career for the new challenge of law enforcement “was a big career change” for her, and “a pretty risky decision.” Nevertheless, according to Hayden, it was the best decision she has ever made.

Not only is Hayden also now serving as a security officer for Mount Carmel, but her son is a current freshman. While she at first was unsure of what the job at MC would involve, She notes that the staff as well as the students have been very welcoming and friendly. She also thoroughly enjoys the beauty of campus.

Hayden describes her job as “never boring.” She also works as a security officer for various professional sporting events, as well as annually working for the Taste of Chicago.

Given all the different work experiences Hayden has explored, it’s quite apparent that she has much to offer MC.
