Holding human organs isn’t an everyday experience for students at Mount Carmel. Surprisingly, a group of students had just this experience.

This past summer, Ms. Maryhelen Matijevic, Assistant Principal, brought 10 Mount Carmel honors students to the University of Chicago Hospital for a field trip that explored careers in medicine. A group of current medical students joined Mount Carmel alum Dr. Michael Veronesi  in explaining various opportunities in the medical field, and discussing the course work and other requirements necessary to  become a doctor.

The day kicked off in a lecture hall for a brief meeting, after which the students made their way to the pathology lab. There the Carmel students held and observed organs such as brains, kidneys, and lungs. The group compared these healthy and unhealthy organs, observed CAT scans, and took a short quiz as well.

In a short time the students absorbed considerable interesting  information from people who are involved with medicine everyday. “It was enlightening to be taught from a medical student’s perspective,” said sophomore Nolan Panepinto.

“Dr. Veronesi actually taught us and explained functions of the heart and how it works,” said senior Robert Rajic, which  gave him a better understanding of what he was being shown.
