“Mom Prom” heralds start of holiday season

At the beginning of the holiday season each year, Mount Carmel hosts its annual Mother-Son Dance.  The annual “Mom Prom” is a good time for young men to spend time with their mothers, classmates, and friends, and signals the beginning of holiday festivities at MC. This year’s dance will be held on Saturday, December 5, from 8:00 to 10:30 P.M. in the Commons.  Tickets are $35 per pair.

For many, this evening begins with dinner, often in a group with other students and moms, at various restaurants.  Upon arriving a MC, most choose to donate a toy to Mount Carmel’s Advent Action toy drive, which will support the charitable efforts of the Kevin Dowling Foundation.  In turn, each couple receives a small gift, usually a Christmas ornament, as a memento of the evening.  Students and their mothers then proceed into the Commons, where most of the entertainment takes place.  Half of the area is used as a dance floor, while the other half of the room is filled with tables decorated in a holiday theme, and an array of food and beverages including punch, water, cookies, and cupcakes.

Typically, there will be photo booths available.  In past years, many mothers and sons have enjoyed the unique opportunity to take silly photos with props, such as masks or scarfs.  However, the more sentimental often choose to pose for a photo from a professional photographer as a keepsake.

The DJ typically features current music with some foreign dance music mixed in.  At the end of the night, students are called onto the dance floor by grade level for a final dance with their mothers.  In whole, the evening is a great opportunity for MC students to show appreciation to their mothers for all they have sacrificed to enable them to attend the school.
