Spirit Week breaks through late winter doldrums
If you walked into the walls of MC on Monday, March 14, you would have seen people all over the school dressed the same. No, it was not some odd coincidence; it was the beginning of Mount Carmel’s Spring Spirit Week. Monday’s theme was “twin day” and the activity of the day was the pep rally with the rock-paper-scissors tournament.
Tuesday’s dress code was “wear pink” and the activity was basketball. The first game featured seniors vs freshman and – huge surprise here – the seniors won. By a lot. Next was juniors vs sophomores, and this one was much closer. Shockingly the sophomores beat the juniors. The final match up of the day was a close game until the seniors hit multiple three point shots and pulled away from the sophomores.
Wednesday’s dress down theme called for sports jerseys or grammar school wear. The activity was a Mount Carmel favorite, Taste of MC. Clubs and organizations set up tables offering different dishes and sold them during the lunch periods. Popular choices included the Mother’s Club’s spicy jerk chicken, while the rugby team sold pasta “all the way from Italy”.
Thursday was the St. Baldrick’s assembly and the dress down was “anything green.” 39 students shaved their heads in support of the charity which focuses on children who have cancer. Also at this assembly Mount Carmel remembered former faculty member Kevin Hansen, who taught at MC for 7 years before suddenly passing over last Easter Break from leukemia, and Pat McNamara, an incoming freshman when he passed away from a brain tumor. Pat’s brother Tim McNamara ’17 and Pat’s best friend John McKeown ’16 spoke about Pat Mac’s Pack, which like St. Baldrick’s, raises funds for pediatric cancer research.
One of the highlights of the assembly occurred when the student body raised over 2,000 dollars in order to see Padre Benjamin Aguilar, the Dean of Discipline at MC, get hit in the face with shaving cream.
On Friday the dress down was class colors. Freshman wore pink, sophomores yellow, juniors red, seniors blue. The activity was Just-Because games. The highlight was when the senior participants walked into the gym with a freshman over their head and preformed a “sacrifice” of the underclassman. The Spring Spirit Week was a fun filled time and it brought our school’s school spirit.
