Dominic Antonietti will serve as Mount Carmel’s student body president in 2016-17.

Student body elections are anticipated in every school around the country, and it’s no different at Mount Carmel.  Starting in March, juniors begin to consider whether to run for student council president, and votes are cast by freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and faculty members in early May.  Dominic Antonietti emerged as the winner in this year’s election, and will serve as student body president for 2016-17.

Antonietti initially was indecisive about pursuing the position.  However, after much consideration, he decided that it would be in his and the school’s best interest.  Once his decision was made, he immediately began working on a fun, innovative campaign in late March to spread the news.

Everything relied on the details.  It is no easy task winning over the entire student population as well as the teachers. However, as a straight ‘A’ student, a member of the football and lacrosse teams, and having been involved in numerous clubs, Antonietti is well known.

When it came to election day, each candidate made his way around the school campaigning.  The school was full of political rhetoric, though on a much smaller scale than our current national presidential campaign.  Antonietti came up with clever quotes like “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you,” from Rick Astley’s song Never Gonna Give You Up.

Director of Student Activities Tyler Jones appreciates what Antonietti will bring to his leadership role for the 2016-2017 school year. “He is definitely qualified, so I am excited to get underway and see how well he does.  It is not easy organizing events that the entire school will be attending.”  A lot of Antonietti’s time will be spent listening to the students to help improve the experience everyone is having.  His speaking skills also will be crucial as he will be addressing the incoming class of freshman over the summer. This is one of the many jobs that he will have during his senior year.

Mr. Sean Sweany, Mount Carmel’s Director of Student Engagement, was pleased with the entire election process this year.  “All of the candidates were well-represented in the voting, which I was very happy about.” This is a testament to the strong group of young men who will be seniors next year, leaving the school in good hands.
