Inaugural Leadership Conference teaches event planning
Mount Carmel hosted a Leadership Conference for 7th and 8th graders from six Catholic grammar schools on October 21, 2016. Arriving at 9:30 AM, the grammar school students were welcomed by Principal John Stimler, President Ned Hughes, and Director of Student Activities Patrick McGarry, who spoke briefly about how much work goes into the many activities at Mount Carmel.
The program continued with a keynote address by 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea. A 1987 graduate of Mount Carmel, O’Shea observed that Catholic schools traditionally produce “great leaders,” and challenged the junor high students to add to that tradition.
“Leaders (need to) get past their shyness, speak up, speak out, and make (their) voice heard.”
Following O’Shea’s presentation, the grammar school groups split up, with each student participating in three workshops from the six that were offered. Choices included Social Event Planning, Athletic Event Planning, Service Event Planning, Advertising and Public Relations, Funding and Fundraising.
Grammar schools that participated were St. Ailbe, St. Barnabas, Christ the King, St. Philip Neri, Scared Heart and St. Thomas the Apostle.
