Freshmen cagers finish season strong

Mount Carmel’s reputation as an athletic powerhouse was proven yet again by this year’s Freshmen Brown basketball team which finished the season with a perfect record of 22-0.

The team started out by winning the Joliet West Thanksgiving Tournament, and never looked back after that.

The Freshmen White team also started out strong, winning its first three games in the Joliet West Thanksgiving Tournament.  However, it ended up losing in the championship to York, the beginning of a seven game losing streak. After that extended slump, the White Team regrouped to finish the season strong, winning the final two games against St. Laurence and Lincoln-Way West.

This year’s combined Brown and White squads were made up of 26 players who come from 25 different grammar schools, reflecting the geographical diversity of the school.  The player’s heights ranged from 5’1 to 6’4, proving that there is still a place in basketball for the quick, shorter player.

Freshman Jack Dennehy, part of the Brown Team, attributed the undefeated season to his team’s chemistry. ” We worked very well together from the beginning; this made it very easy for us to find our stride, and we just  never looked back.’
