Chicago Cubs 2015:  (97-65, 3rd in division)

Key additions: John Lackey, Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist

Returning players: Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell, Dexter Fowler, Miguel Montero, Kyle Schwarber

Outlook:  After a season of unexpected success, the Chicago Cubs are projected to be even better in 2016.  Despite the team’s loss in the National League Championship Series, many are convinced that its depth, youth, and experience all around the diamond make the north side club the best team in baseball.

In order to contend for a World Series title, a team must have all-around talent, consistency, and chemistry.  The 2015 Cubs had all of these characteristics, and their deep playoff run showed it.  This year’s team has mostly the same roster returning but with  some additional key signings may be even better.

The Cubs’ rotation could be the best in baseball, with ace and 2015 Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta, veteran lefty Jon Lester, newly acquired starting pitcher John Lackey, young arm Kyle Hendricks, and flamethrower Jason Hammel.  The bullpen is young and talented, consisting of pitchers Travis Wood, Pedro Strop, and up-and-coming closer Hector Rondon.

The infield is just as strong, with the potential of being the best in the major leagues.  The starting six includes Golden-Glove 1st baseman Anthony Rizzo, newly signed 2nd baseman Ben Zobrist, young shortstop Addison Russell, 2015 Rookie of the Year 3rd baseman Kris Bryant, and catcher Miguel Montero.  The outfield is loaded as well, with Kyle Schwarber returning in left field and veterans Jason Heyward and Dexter Fowler joining the club.

As a team, the Cubs batting average was .244 in 2015.  This is above the league average, but the team should be able to improve this season with another year of experience.

MC junior and lifelong Cubs fan Jake Gurgevich has high hopes for his team this season.  “They may be the only team in baseball that could win 100 games.”
