In its 116 year history, many star athletes have come through the halls of Mount Carmel.  Mr. Alex Tsirtsis, one of Mount Carmel’s newest faculty members, brings an impressive resume as a top wrestler at both the high school and collegiate levels to the community as the school’s new Head Wrestling Coach.

In high school, Tsirtsis was a wrestling phenomenon, going undefeated all four years (236-0) at Griffith High School in northwest Indiana.  He continued his storied career on the mat at the University of Iowa, where he named an All-American.  He graduated from the university in 2009.

After earning his degree at Iowa, Tsirtsis served as a clerk at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for two years, before founding the Region Wresling Academy in Gary, Indiana in 2010.  The club provides intensive training for middle school through high school, with many Mount Carmel students attending the institution, such as former Illinois state champion Jake Tucker ’16, who now wrestles at Michigan State.

Tsirtsis’ role at Mount Carmel will include teaching the physical education classes as well as succeeding Coach John Kading as the head wrestling coach.

The new coach is excited for the upcoming season, and impressed by how clearly the school’s staff “truly cares about everyone.”

Having been a part of many successful programs, Tsirtsis knows a few things about what it takes.  “This is the type of community that gets things done the right way.”
