The air was freezing cold, but the atmosphere was on fire. Tuesday night’s game, Mount Carmel Caravan vs Reavis Rams, was a soccer game no one would ever forget. Almost everybody’s toes were numb by the end of the first half, but the game was worth it. Reavis put two in the back of the net early in the game, scored by Reavis forward Fernando Baragan. The first goal came after a free kick sent Sergio Valencia, sophomore goalkeeper, the wrong way as it hit the post and went in. The student section for the Rams was loud the entire first half. But at halftime, the Caravan went into the locker room with their heads held high.

What could’ve been the final 40 minutes of the Caravan’s season, started nothing short of perfect. As the ball was kicked to start the half, everybody in the stadium knew that the game had changed. The comeback kids had taken over. Cesar Cosio, senior forward, leveled the score at 2-2 within 10 minutes of kickoff. After a quick exchange of goals from both teams, the score was 3-3. With 2 minutes and 17 seconds left, the Caravan struck on a goal scored by one of Mount Carmel’s top finishers, Josiah Ash. Ash had been struggling to put the ball in the goal the entire game, having one ring off the crossbar and another cleared off the line.

A penalty kick given to the Caravan with ten seconds left was the result of a foul in the box, resulting in a Reavis red card. With ten seconds left, the game felt over. There were smiles and tears all over the field, but the Caravan soccer team won with class and congratulated their opponents on a great season. The Comeback Kids stuck again.

This wasn’t the first time the Caravan came back to win in a single-elimination game. Round one of the playoffs, the Caravan battled Lincoln-Way East in a nail biting contest. After giving up a two goal lead, the Caravan succeeded yet again in overtime, making it 3-2. Cesar Cosio took it upon himself with just 10 minutes left of overtime to score two powerful goals, boosting the Caravan to the regional finals only a few days later.
