McGarry ecstatic to return to roots

Mr. Partick McGarry joined Mount Carmel’s Theology department, will teach both sophomores and juniors.

Growing up on the south side of Chicago is a unique experience, especially growing up in the Mt. Greenwood/Beverly area. The neighborhood has a very homey feeling; almost everyone knows, or has heard of everyone else. It just makes you want to stay around your entire life.

This is shown in the case of new Mount Carmel theology teacher, Mr. Patrick McGarry, who grew up in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood. McGarry attended Queen of Martyrs Elementary School, then Mt. Carmel ’07, and then finished off his educational career at St. Xavier University where he majored in philosophy and Religious Studies. McGarry is a part of what many current students/faculty call a “legacy.” Before McGarry was a part of the Caravan, the McGarry family name had a long tradition, with his father and six brothers also attending MC.

When McGarry got his call at the beginning of the second trimester to come in and teach a couple of theology classes, he was ecstatic. “It’s very weird being on the other side” (becoming a part of the faculty instead of being a student).” This place has the same smell; its a very distinct smell, its has an incredible sense of home to me. I want to be working this job until the day I die; I love this place.”

When asked what he can provide to the MC community, he quickly responded, “With my background of being a student here I know how these high school boys think.” He also brings a solid theological training which will help him provide students with the same foundation he was given.

When not spending his days at MC, McGarry has many hobbies, including  building bean bag boards, doing some woodwork,  cooking, and watching superhero movies. McGarry will also be joining the MC Rugby coaching staff this season after playing throughout his four years here at MC.
