Caravan looks to turn season around in playoffs
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Caravan varsity basketball team looked to turn around its 9-17 record in the Catholic League playoffs, despite the loss of one of its starters. After an opening loss to DePaul Prep, a victory against St. Laurence High School evened the tournament record at 1-1.
Starting guard Christian Peevy might be out for a while. “I was elbowed by a player and shattered my jaw.” According to Head Coach Mike Flaherty, the 6’4 and 168 pound guard was a big factor in the team’s game plan as he averaged 11 points per game.
Still, Flaherty is hopeful that the team’s second leading scorer, Nick Chambers, can make up for Peevy’s loss. “Nick averages 12.5 points per game and I know he will get us the victory.”
But scoring is not been the only issue on the coach’s mind. Flaherty pointed out “We have to take care of the ball because we had too many turnovers.”
Despite the disappointing regular season, the team remains confident about its chances in the playoffs.
Point guard Jake Rhode, the team’s leading scorer, averaging almost 14 ppg, put his finger on one reason for that confidence. “I feel like we’ve been through every type of situation this year and played arguably the best teams in the state, so that will prepare us for the playoffs.”
While Rhode admits that Peevy’s injury presents a challenge, he still believes his teammates can get the job done. “It affects the team when you lose one of your players that you’ve been playing with the entire year,” stated Rhode, who nevertheless is confident that Kevin Krahn will do a good job stepping into the starting lineup.
