Scanlan continues family legacy

Mr. Tom Scanlan teaches technology and moderates CBN.

Mr. Tom Scanlan brings youth and energy to an experienced Mount Carmel faculty. At the spry age of 21, Scanlan teaches juniors and seniors in tech class and guides students involved in CBN (Caravan Broadcast Network). In addition to teaching students the art of video production, Scanlan creates several of the school’s promotional videos himself.

Following his graduation from Mount Carmel, Scanlan played football at Northern Illinois University and was a part of the 2014 MAC (Mid-American Conference) championship team.

Scanlan graduated from Northern Illinois that year, and before he knew it, was being interviewed for Mount Carmel’s technology position to replace long-time CBN moderator Mike Himes. Soon after being interviewed, Scanlan was starting his first day as a new member of the Mount Carmel faculty.

Scanlan seems ecstatic about  being appointed to the faculty and is eager to push the CBN and programming classes to be the best they can be.

Scanlan is honest about why he came back. “I really needed the job.”But he also wanted to come back to Mount Carmel to “fulfill a teaching legacy that my family has.”

Scanlan is “95 percent sure” that he is the first triple teaching legacy at Mount Carmel, and he might be right. Charles Patrick Scanlan, his grandfather, was a 1952 graduate and taught from 1959-1972. Tom Scanlan Sr, his father, was a 1993  graduate and taught from 1998-1999.

Scanlan grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and still resides in the Beverly neighborhood. He is the cousin of two current Mount Carmel students: Jack Scanlan, Class of ’16, and Colin Sage, Class of ’17.
