The 64th Chapter is a student group at Mount Carmel High School that focuses on building strong connections between students and alumni. The group gives young men a place where they can talk openly, feel supported, and learn from people who once attended the school.
According to 64th Chapter moderator Mr. Nate Turner, the main goal of the organization is to bring together current students and former MC graduates.
“Our main focus is to bridge the gap between our alumni and young men that are still in high school at Mount Carmel,” Mr. Turner said. He explained that the group creates space for honest conversations about life and its challenges.
The 64th Chapter often invites alumni back to campus to speak with students. These speakers share stories about their time at MC, mistakes they made, and lessons they learned. Mr. Turner said these meetings help students learn how to avoid similar challenges while also feeling comfortable asking questions. Food and drinks are usually included to help create a relaxed setting. Senior Chukwuebuka Odeluga said the 64th Chapter helps students feel less alone.
“It is meant to be a haven for students and a place to comfortably speak our minds together and feel valued through a sense of community,” Odeluga said. He explained that high school can be stressful, especially for young men, and the group connects students with alumni who understand what they are going through.
The leadership team includes student officers Lamont Miller, Aaron Hyler, and Odeluga, along with moderators Mrs. Emma Norise and Mr. Turner. The group meets on Wednesdays and uses social media to reach students. In addition to meeting, the 64th Chapter hopes to do more service and volunteer work in the MC and Chicago communities. Junior Aaron Hyler said the group is open to everyone and focuses on inclusion.
“Most people think that it is a Black student union, but it is not,” Hyler said. “We accept all people, no matter their background.”
He said the group brings together students from different cultures and experiences and helps them feel connected. Mrs. Norise said her goal is to make sure every student feels welcome.
“I just want them to feel like they are in a safe place,” Mrs. Norise said. She added that MC gives students the chance to grow, share their feelings, and feel supported, especially when it comes to mental health.
The 64th Chapter also hosts alumni speakers, one of which recently was MC alum and former Chicago Bear Stephen Edwards. Mrs. Norise said Edwards spoke about facing adversity and not giving up on dreams. His message encouraged students to keep working toward their goals even when things get difficult.
Through conversation, support, and mentorship the 64th Chapter continues to help students build confidence and strong connections at MC.
