Wrestling returns with major changes
Winter sports are finally beginning, and the IHSA is allowing high-risk sports, including wrestling, to compete. However, the season will be shortened and competition will be limited.
The season will start April 19, last a little over two months, and consist of just dual meets. All schools participating in the dual can be located at most 30 miles from the place where the dual is taking place, or be in the same conference. Wrestlers will be required to wear masks at all times.
The schedule for the entire season will be released soon, , although two meets have been scheduled already. Mount Carmel will wrestle returning team state champion Montini and Marmion. A state tournament will not be held by the IHSA. However, the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association(IWCOA) will be holding a state tournament at the end of the season.
The wrestling team had high expectations for this year after taking second at team state last season. There are eight returning starters, six of those being state qualifers. Among them are three number 1 ranked wrestlers in seniors Noah Mis, Connor Gaynor, and junior Ryan Boersma. With the firepower the team has going into this season, they were hoping for more freedom in terms of competitions.
