New clubs look to get students involved

The first thing many think of when they hear the word “extracurricular” – especially at Mount Carmel – would probably be sports. Mount Carmel’s reputation for athletic success is second to none.  However, in addition to the 16 varsity sports, there also are numerous clubs and activities to enrich a student’s high school experience, including several new clubs this year.

The new Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation club  (JPIC) brings together several groups that focus on service, including the Studium Mission representatives, a new Service Club (which will be moderated by Mr. Scott Sortal), and an Environmental Club (headed by Mr. Jon Nelson).  The goal of combining these  clubs is to encourage those students who participate to think more broadly about ways the Mount Carmel community can be of service.  Nelson hopes that the club will have a positive effect on participants, giving them “the personal satisfaction of helping others.”

One of the clubs that has been around for years is the Classics Club, run by Mr. Sean Sweany.  Members learn more about the Latin language and compete against other schools in contests involving knowledge of the classical world.

Another long-standing activity is the Spanish Club, led by Mr. Antonio Mota.  Members enjoy opportunities to practice their Spanish language skills, learn more about the Spanish culture  and explore the cuisine at Spanish restaurants.  Mota believes his club gives students a good opportunity “to dictate what they want to learn and what they want to try.”

Among other new clubs  for the 2014-15 school year are the Math Club, headed by Mr. Anthony DeAngelis, the Creative Writing Club, moderated by Mr. Philip McGovern, and a Model UN club, led by Mr. Neil Heyman.

Many of these clubs currently are recruiting new members.  Interested students should contact the club moderator, or consult the Daily Bulletin for more information about meeting times.
