Scanlan hopes to break through with new app
Mount Carmel’s very own Mr. Thomas Scanlan is nearing completion on a months-long project, by which he plans to one day make shoppers’ lives easier. For much of the last year, MC’s tech teacher has had his hands full balancing teaching while creating his own website/mobile app, and now he hopes his dedication is about to pay off.
“Unight” (scheduled to be released next week) is a business distribution-targeted application that allows companies to connect with users by distributing coupons/rewardsm, which Scanlan describes as “basically a better and easier version of GroupOn.” Users can create a free account and easily browse for deals on the website and application. Once registered, costumers can search their zip code and businesses that have deals available will pop up on the app’s map. Rewards are also given to users when deals are made.
For Scanlan, the idea began a year ago when he was browsing through similar deal-making apps. He thought of a simpler process, and began planning his new idea. 10,000 lines of coding and hundreds of hours later, his project is nearly ready to launch. The app will be available on IOS and Android, along with being a webpage.
As he has spent a great deal of time working on “Unight,” Scanlan has had an able assistant – MC senior Tyler Stanish. Stanish – already an advanced coder – assisted by building the mobile app. Scanlan provided Stanish with additional training to guarantee he was qualified for the work, and “once he was ready, he became a tremendous help.”
Now on the brink of release, Scanlan hopes to make it big. “Unight” will be available for free download. Happy dealing!
