Warriors reign in regular season, but look out for Cavs

The Warriors have all the buzz in the world right now after coming out red hot and maintaining that intensity from the start to the finish of the regular season. The reigning NBA champions recorded the best season in NBA history, dethroning the dominant ’95-96 Chicago Bulls with a total of 73 wins and a .890 win percentage, opposed to 72 wins and an .878 win percentage. If you ask anyone who understands basketball who is the team most likely win the NBA Finals, the obvious answer will be Golden State.

They’ve been unbeatable all season long, recording only nine losses and simply dominating their opponents. Most of this success is credited to the play of the reigning (and this year’s undisputed winner) MVP point guard Stephen Curry and all – star shooting guard Klay Thompson.

In addition, they held an astonishing record of 39 – 2 at home (including riding a 54 game win streak dating from January of last season). They went 36 – 0 at the Oracle Arena before falling to the Boston Celtics on April 1. Even though they have acquired all these accolades throughout this season, none of it will matter if they do not bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to Oakland for a second consecutive year.

Obviously, the defending champs are the overwhelming favorites to win the 2016 NBA Finals. In a recent poll I made on Twitter, the results confirmed Golden State’s odds to win the championship are at 65% (13 votes) as opposed to the ” fields’ ” 35% (7 votes). Though it may seem like there is no hope for most teams to bring down the Warriors, I believe that they will get to the Finals, but will be defeated and a new champion will be crowned – the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Yes, I am calling for another Finals rematch between the two teams, but judging from the competition in the Eastern and Western conferences, these teams are far too superior against the rest. In last years’ Finals matchup, Golden State won the series in six games (4 – 2 ). However, Cleveland was down two out of its three best starters in guard Kyrie Irving and forward Kevin Love due to injury. Irving went down in game one of the Finals with a fractured kneecap, while Love acquired a separated shoulder in an altercation against the Boston Celtics forward Kelly Olynyk in the first round of the playoffs. These injuries resulted in both players missing the rest of the postseason.

Without Irving and Love, Lebron James basically carried his Cavaliers throughout the playoffs. But in the end, Golden State’s firepower was too much for the short – handed Cavs. Even though James’ play was impressive, no team cannot expect to simply beat the fully – loaded Warriors without all of their weapons at their disposal.

However, this year is a new year and Cleveland knows they could’ve achieved their first ever NBA championship if they were at full strength. That is what makes this years’ Cavs team hungrier than ever. Their team’s stats are virtually better in every category opposed to last season credited to new head coach, Tyronn Lue. Fans should be very excited and expect nothing less than an NBA title in June. I believe that Cleveland will come into this year’s finals with a chip on their shoulder and will ultimately beat Golden State in in seven games (4 – 3).
